Year 5 (and some of Year 6) had a French themed week! They learned how to order in a French restaurant and tasted lots of French food – including croissants, pains au chocolats and camembert.

Year 5 enthusiastically tucking into some savoury Greek snacks, courtesy of Oskar at the Olive Garden Mediterranean restaurant in Dunstable (http://olivegardendunstable.com/).  Thank you so much for helping us in our research. The class favourite snack was Triopitta!

The Solar System

Here we are making the orbits of the planets ourselves-this helped us to answer the question ‘what is a year?’

Science

During Science we really enjoyed investigating the properties and changes that occurred when adding water to sodium polyacrylate-otherwise known as instasnow!

We loved mixing and separating different materials, with some surprising results.

Wild Science

Meeting animals close-up helped us to develop our understanding of reproduction and life-cycles of a range of animals, including the hairless rat!

Nissan

A fabulous day out at Cranfield university combining Design technology, Science and Maths. We designed, built and raced cars and were given a tour of the factory. Children were able to see their learning in Science come to life! (No cameras were allowed in this bit-the development of the latest models is very secret!)

Priory Church

We spent a fascinating day learning about the founder of our school and her family, who were very important benefactors for our town of Dunstable.

Learning about the Priory buildings circa 1450, was very interesting and we stood on the spot in the Lady chapel where King Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon was annulled.

Design Technology

Children have really enjoyed designing and making their own bags from recycled t-shirts and vests.

Some very cleaver ideas incorporated with developing applique techniques and some tye die produced some fabulous results.

RE

These beaded cross bookmarks followed on from our learning about the symbols of Easter during the story of Holy week and Easter day.

Year 5 children designed and made Taize crosses as Christmas decorations using clay-these special crosses incorporate the symbol of a dove to spread the message of peace.

Our year 5 children had the opportunity to learn how to play the Djembe drums. The Djembe comes from West Africa. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were able to play ‘call and response ‘ patterns. They learnt about creating steady beats, pitch and tone, and what an ostinato is.

Please take a look at our photos below.

Learning takes place at home and here in school and it is important that we work together in partnership to provide the best opportunities for all our children. We plan a range of learning opportunities throughout each term and encourage you to take a look at our plans below, so that you can talk to your child about their learning and support it further at home.
