Reading is fundamental to both learning and understanding in our print dominated world. We believe that every child in our school should have the opportunity and help to become as fully literate as they are able.
We value the teaching of reading and feel that it is important to give time for regular opportunities for reading. At Ashton St Peter’s Primary School we believe that children should be given opportunities throughout the school day, which encourages progress in reading.
Reading Scheme
Reception and Key Stage 1, children read Big Cat Phonics books which align with our phonics programme Essential Letters & Sounds.
As phonic knowledge becomes secure, children continue to read higher level Big Cat Phonics books as well as a range of other books chosen for their engaging and challenging vocabulary and contexts.
Children take their reading books and Reading Record home daily. The Reading Record is signed by the parent or guardian and there is a space for comments and communication between home and the class teacher.
We encourage a shared reading approach which involves children, teachers and parents working together in partnership. Parents are encouraged to hear their children read regularly and discuss the books with their children.
Teaching of Reading
Children are taught to read through a combination of 1:1 reading, phonics teaching, guided reading groups and whole class reading, depending on the age of the child and their reading ability.
To develop a love of reading, it is also important that children hear adults read to them, so teachers regularly read a variety of carefully chosen, high-quality texts to the children.
